First Timer's Camping Weekend

I live in the South, and have never been camping. I'm surrounded by lake goers and camping fools, yet I've never actually spent the night outside in a tent, aka - what I consider the truest form of camping lol.

SO, my bf lives on a boat on the lake, and I've pretty much drove him nuts for over a year wanting to go camping. We were supposed to go last weekend, but it was 4th of July weekend, and he thought it'd be better to wait (which I thought was STUPID, at the time, but really worked out).

Finally, the bf says all conditions are 100% and we can go camping. I'm estactic. No school, no plans, just a 2 day blissful camping adventure.

Friday morning I wake up to a text from the bf at 5:30 am saying he is ready for me to drive that way. FAIL #1. He's lucky I even got the text, the only reason I saw it was that we had an alarm set to run for 5:30am. The night before he said that he would be ready around 8 or 9 probably, which in my mind gave me time to run AND pack.

Anyway, I jump up and get to going on getting packed up and ready to leave (running has been completely thrown to the wayside). I'm completely packed, showered, and ate breakfast within an hour. Record time.

Fill up the ole ice chest at the gas station on the way out of town, and I'm at the bf's in an hour.
We load up the flatbottom to take us where we needed to go.
It's a beautiful day, and I am like a 8 year old child full of emotion.

We get to the campsite and he lights up the fire and we unpack. IMMEDIATELY I realize what I've forgotten.... my shoes. I was wearing chacos on the way there (my swim shoes, not hiking....how do ppl hike in them?!) and meant to grab a pair of tennis shoes that I keep at the bfs before we left. Shoot me. I act like it's no big deal, because hey, I'm a low maintenence girl that this man needs to realize I'm worthy of keeping and taking camping again lol.

We hike down a little trail, collect enough firewood to build a small house, and the rest of the day we just had a blast. We swam and went fishing, and just all the camping mess you could think of. At high noon we were like desert animals just huddled under the tent shade. It was SO hot. We fell asleep for probably two hours, just because we refused to move from the shade. Might have been the hottest day of the year.

Fajitas were cooked on the fire later, and then we got into the tent to lay down and sleep because it was dark. Now... this is where I decided that camping could be done differently.

I was assured that I need not bring my sleeping bag bc he had it under control.... NO CONTROL WAS HAD. 2 blankets, well I'm not even giving it that, 1 blanket and a throw were laid down. We were on a hill and it was a rocky one. Also, I was told it wasn't cold..... Are you kidding me?! I would have gladly taken the rocks, but the cold was unbearable. Like...... holy smokes.

When we woke up in the morning we decided that maybe we should take things one day at a time and call ourselves Champs for our one successful camping night. We roasted marshmallows for breakfast, then packed up and headed home!

Now, camping is still my thing. It was a lot of fun, and I would go again next weekend if he wanted to. BUT, there were definite things that will be added next time....aka shoes and a sleeping bag.

So there it is, the tale of my first time camping. Wouldn't trade it for the world. ;)

  1. Oh fun! I really want to go camping. Of course, it's probably something I should have convinced Hubs to do before the kids. Now it just sounds like a lot of work, but I still want to take them. You'll be more prepared next time but it sounds like fun anyway!

    1. I never went as a kid, so this was defintely something new and fun for me. It was some rugged business, next time we're laying out the tent on grass or dirt...not rocks lol.
